supporting charities
We are committed to supporting charities through a range
of initiatives including fundraising activities and events, pro
bono work, sponsorship and volunteering.
Who we support
We support and promote our official 'Charity of the
Year', which is chosen and informed by annual employee consultation
and feedback. Our nominated charity for 2010/2011
is Willow Wood Hospice which provides specialist
palliative care to patients suffering with life-threatening
illnesses and has cared for over 2000 patients and their families
since it opened in 1999.
We also support local chairities and charitable
initiatives whenever we can. We have recently supported The MS Support Centre, The Alzheimer's
Society, Nightingale House
Hopsice, Empowering Youth
Foundation, RSPCA Wirral, Shelter and
Claire House.
We are also backing a campaign to support the plight
of persecuted trade unionists in Colombia, South America; we have
also signed up to Justice for Colombia, a
petition urging the British Government to rethink its support for
the country's president Alvaro Uribe. We also support
the United Campaign and the
Bevan Foundation.
Supporting our people
We support all Walker Smith Way people in their charitable
endeavours, including those undertaken outside work. Many of our
people volunteer and offer pro bono work to a wide variety of
charities and we also encourage and support people taking part in
their own fundraising events, for example Cancer Research UK's Race
for Life, midnight walks, bikeathons and various endurance
challenges.
