Local law firm meets new need for divorce mediation
Press release : Wednesday 20th
July
A local law firm is ready to meet the government's new rules for separating and divorcing
couples, who are now required to try mediation before going to the
courts.
Leading regional practice Walker Smith Way has a fully qualified
mediator on hand at its Chester and Wrexham offices to help couples through the new
regulations, which came into force on 6th April in
England and Wales. After a compulsory initial mediation information and assessment
meeting, they can choose whether or not to take the mediation route
or another form of alternative dispute resolution such as collaborative law.
The change in rules will not affect cases where there are any child protection or recent domestic violence issues.
Said Janet Baines, a partner in Walker Smith
Way's family law department: "We welcome
these changes - the breakdown of a relationship is always
distressing and discussing a failed marriage or relationship can be
extremely difficult. Outside help can make it possible for couples
to talk about their situation productively.
"Whilst court cases are by their nature confrontational and
hostile, mediation or collaborative law with a properly
qualified professional can resolve issues in a quicker, less
expensive and less acrimonious way. This can really help to
minimise the stress that surrounds divorce."
Continued Janet: "The biggest advantage of mediation is that it's the best way to
discuss childcare arrangements. It's very
important for children to know that their mum and dad are working
together to put their needs first."
