Darren joined Walker Smith Way in 2003 as a trainee solicitor
and qualified in 2005. He practices in personal injury litigation
and has considerable experience working with people with
catastrophic injuries, particularly spinal cord injuries. Much of
this experience is based upon his early career as the manager of
Transhouse, an independent living scheme for people with
catastrophic injuries based at the RJ & AH Orthopaedic Hospital
in Oswestry, Shropshire.
As someone who was injured in an accident and sustained a spinal
cord injury himself, Darren has a genuine understanding of clients'
needs. He is also a trustee of the Spinal Injury Association and
vice chairman of Transhouse.
Why did you choose to specialise in personal
injury?
During my time as the manager of Transhouse I regularly came
into contact with personal injury solicitors acting on behalf of
clients. Through this contact I developed an interest in personal
injury litigation and eventually decided to train as a
solicitor.
What has been the highlight of your career so
far?
Being offered a position here. As well as allowing me to
practice in the area of law that has always appealed to me, I am
working with a local law firm that my family have used for many
years.
What do you feel most passionate about within your
working life?
Obtaining damages for someone who has been injured to enable
them to achieve a quality of life which may not have been possible
otherwise.
What do you feel most passionate about within your
home life?
My wife and our first child who was born in 2005. As you can
imagine our lives pretty much revolve around him at the
moment.
If you won the lottery tomorrow, what's the first
thing you'd do?
Try and work out how I won it when I don't buy a lottery
ticket, but spend it nonetheless.
