Walker Smith Way solicitors are backing a campaign to support the plight of persecuted trade unionists in Colombia, South America.
The firm has signed up to Justice for Colombia, which is urging the British Government to rethink its apparently unconditional support for the country’s president Alvaro Uribe.
Partner, Neil Turnbull said: “Walker Smith Way works closely with trade unions in England and Wales. Our support for Justice for Colombia is an extension of this and allows us to show our solidarity with trade unionists in Colombia.
“There are already a number of projects underway in the South American country which we have supported here in the UK in an effort to raise the issue at a national level.”
Justice for Colombia claims that under the leadership of President Uribe, right wing death squads have been responsible for the assassination of hundreds of trade union leaders, teachers and ordinary workers.
Members of Unite, formerly the Transport and General Workers’ Union, recently visited Colombia on a fact-finding visit.
