Walker Smith Way supports Special Riding Centre

Local law firm Walker Smith Way is getting ready for the off as it prepares for a year of fundraising for Clwyd Special Riding Centre, its nominated charity for 2010.

The Clwyd Special Riding Centre provides a unique opportunity for children and adults with special needs to enjoy riding, carriage-driving and vaulting (gymnastics on horseback). Run by a group of volunteers, the centre welcomes over 200 people each week from North Wales, Cheshire and further afield, and is largely funded by donations.

Said Tessa Chew, Centre Manager: “Our riders are dealing with a wide range of conditions, which can be anything from autism or learning difficulties to cerebral palsy and spina bifida. The therapeutic value of interacting with horses is really important for them physically and mentally. As well as pure enjoyment, improved confidence, balance, fitness and brain stimulation can come from the experience.

“Although we occasionally get grants for specific projects, most of our running costs are met thanks to the generosity of private firms, local businesses and individual donations. We’re the only facility of our kind for a long way – the next closest centre is in Hereford, and doesn’t have as many amenities or volunteers as we do – so we’re really pleased that Walker Smith Way has chosen us as their charity.”

Said Walker Smith Way’s Marketing Manager Elen Rowlands: “We’re delighted to be supporting Clwyd Special Riding Centre over the next year. The work it does is fantastic and as we have offices in Chester and Wrexham it’s great to be able to support a local charity which has several connections with the firm. A number of our staff are hoping to volunteer as well as fundraise and we’re really looking forward to getting involved.”

Clwyd Special Riding Centre is making Walker Smith Way’s fundraising really count by taking part in Disability Sport Wales’ Sportsmatch programme, which means that the centre can apply for a grant to match the final sum raised by Walker Smith Way pound for pound.

Anyone interested in supporting the centre themselves can find out more on its website at www.clwydspecialridingcentre.org.uk.
