Educational Eastenders?

As the Will of the late Archie Mitchell is being read aloud at the Queen Vic his first wife Glenda rises triumphantly to her feet. She claims that neither the Will nor the marriage of Archie to second wife Peggy can be valid as she was never formally divorced from him.

Nobody seems shocked at the prospect of Archie being a bigamist and the programme ends with typical suspense.

What Glenda has failed to appreciate however is that not all divorces are straightforward. Adultery and Unreasonable Behaviour remain the two most cited reasons for divorce in England and Wales but others do exist – all based around periods of ongoing separation.

Archie has claimed that Glenda has ‘deserted’ him for over two years and obtained a divorce without her involvement.

Although only a television soap this incident does serve to highlight the importance of taking specialist legal advice when considering divorce in order to be fully aware of the various options and potential pitfalls.
