Experts are suggesting that 2010 could see a 2% rise in the divorce rate even though it has fallen gradually over the last decade.
2009 saw a worsening of the economic climate as the recession and credit crunch continued to dominate headlines. As divorce lawyers this seems to have affected our clients in two different ways. For some marriages it has been a catalyst for the final breakdown of the relationship whilst for others difficult decisions have been put on hold as spouses realised that it may not have been the most beneficial time to sell a house or liquidate other assets.
January however is traditionally the month when solicitors receive more enquiries about divorce than any other and statistics suggest that trend may be even more prominent this year.
Counselling service Relate has indicated that they have received a huge upsurge in telephone calls in January from troubled spouses wanting help and advice.
Many people choose to divorce after the Christmas period has come to an end. This often follows a difficult time for families who are simply not accustomed to spending so much time together or who have stayed together for the benefit of their children.
January is also a time when minds turn to the coming year and resolutions are made. People reflect on their lives and relationships and for many it is the state of their marriage that preoccupies them most. Where relationships cannot be saved often the most likely outcome is divorce.
Specialist solicitors can help people through this incredibly difficult time and it is vital that proper legal advice is sought so that people understand all the options available to them.
